Apr 07, 2018· Time Machine over SMB won't be in Samba until 4.8, which is probably a year out. I've been running this in a jail for a few weeks and it seems pretty stable. From a personal standpoint, I prefer doing it in a jail because it gives me the option of not using vfs_fruit on the base system.
Time Machine backups to network destinations via AFP are supported by High Sierra. However, APFS-formatted volumes cannot be exported using AFP. So, if the destination of your Time Machine backups is to an APFS-formatted volume then you have to use SMB or NFS as the network protocol.
Jul 20, 2011· If they really aren't allowing SMB time machine connections anymore and there isn't a work around like before to enable them, I guess people running Windows could always the option of running FreeNAS or Linux in a VM although that would suck.

Oct 08, 2016· "Any Time Machine share points must be shared over SMB instead of AFP." So the limitation isn't the source disk you are backing up, but rather the target disk you are backing up to. As far as I can tell, there's no issue continuing to use my existing Unraid backup target.
Sep 28, 2016· They're probably going to implement Time Machine effectively like SMB Previous Versions. Even if it's gratuitously incompatible, it should be possible to replicate the functionality on FreeNAS, with a bit of work, that will depend on how good the documentation is.

The Samba project recently merged the support necessary for macOS to "see" an SMB shared folder as capable of being a network Time Machine share. That's the good news. That's the good news. The bad news is that your favorite Linux distro probably doesn't have this version (4.8.0) and likely won't until the distro's next major release.
Dec 30, 2017· I'm currently using an Time Machine with an AFP share. It works OK except that my Mac looses the mount every so often. SMB became the preferred way for mounting volumes in 10.11 but AFP was still required (or preferred?) for Time Machine.
Time Machine Backup over SMB to a My Cloud Home is Not Supported. Which is a shame since AFP is deprecated since macOS Mavericks and won't likely be supported for Time Machine in the near future.
